surprise element Right now, however, the surprise element for the staff at the NYBG is the Scutellaria incana. Although they admitted their doubt on the skullcap-front to Oudolf during one of his visits to The Garden this summer, he urged patience. “Just wait,” he promised.

Sure enough, those skullcaps are now sending up innumerable clusters of small, grape-blue blossoms that enhance the blue sheen on the sedums. The scutellaria is definitely holding up its end of the bargain, and then some.
