Despite winter’s punishing weather, the tulip “islands” that van der Kloet superimposed within the perennial configuration are pushing their noses up, defining their territory, revealing the genius behind the collaboration, serving as an overture to the masterful medley to come. Each of the irregularly shaped areas where tulips predominate will unfold into a symphony of glistening pink and white blossoms.
Also to keep the scene continually prime and picture perfect, daffodils are similarly confined to circular spaces with a subdued color palette focusing on white, creamy yellow, and whisper pink. And they are all surrounded by a swarm of specialty bulbs, just beginning to break surface. Then (and here’s where the genius lies), the tulips and daffodils will be popped out and whisked away soon after their performance peaks, to be exchanged for a series of summer-flowering bulbs. Meanwhile, the perennials won’t miss a beat – they run unabbreviated throughout, spaced just as they would be planted if the bulbs weren’t part of the picture.
